Grants and Internships

Day in day out the Federal Chancellor Willy Brandt Foundation receives all kinds of requests for support (e. g. scholarships, financial support for publishing a book, organzinig a workshop, a charitable event etc.) from Germany or other countries. Though many of these projects from the perspective of the Foundation deserve promotion the requests usually have to be denied.

The Brandt Foundation is not a charity or support organization in the narrowest sense. It is not possible to support projects of third parties through grant monies or other subsidies. The Foundation also awards no stipends.

However, the Brandt Foundation supports college students and rising young scholars:

Willy Brandt Prize

Since 2003 the Federal Chancellor Willy Brandt Foundation awards a bi-annual 'Willy Brandt Prize for the Advancement or Rising Young Scholars.' Outstanding dissertations or habilitation theses in an historical, social-scientific or juristic discipline shall be honoured. The theme shall have a relevance in the broadest sense to the foundational purpose of the institution, to preserve the memory of Willy Brandt’s influence. Learn further pertinent details here (in German only).

Internships for Students
The Brandt Foundation offers to students of political science and/or modern history (also from foreign countries if their German is satisfactory) participation in an unpaid internship (status of graduate student required). The term usually covers six weeks. The internship affords an excellent opportunity to familiarize oneself with the manifold tasks of a federal foundation. The emphasis of its activities usually lies with scholarly research work, above all concerning the Foundation’s own edition 'Willy Brandt - Berliner Ausgabe'. Additional emphases lie with the support of press and public relations work as well as with the preparation of Foundation events.
Interested individuals can apply to the Federal Chancellor Willy Brandt Foundation in Schöneberg City Hall, John-F.-Kennedy-Platz, 10825 Berlin, Tel.: (++49) (30) 787707-0, Fax: (++49) (30) 787707-50, Email: info[at]bwbs.de. Since the demand for an internship with the Brandt Foundation is high an early application is recommended (at least six months in advance).
