  • 1963-1971 study of history, political sciences and Germanistics at the universities of Würzburg and Munich
  • 1971 PhD at the University of Würzburg
  • 1979 Qualification for lecturing (habilitation) for modern history
  • Until 2007 professor of polictical sciences and modern history at the University of Mannheim

Other activities in an honorary capacity:

  • Counsel of choice of the Friedrich Ebert Foundation and of the Hans Böckler Foundation
  • Chairman of the Hermann Weber Foundation at the University of Mannheim
  • Member of the Advisory Boards of the "House of the History of the Federal Republik of Germany), the "House of the History of the Land Baden-Württemberg" and of the Friedrich Ebert Memorial Foundation in Heidelberg

Focus of reseach on:

  • European social history since the industrialization
  • History of the labor unions and the worker's parties during the 19th and 20th century
  • Modern German history
