Volume 10 of the Publications Series in English
The latest issue of the Brandt Foundation's own Publication Series was published in German and English: 'Remembering Willy Brandt – Egon Bahr, Henry Kissinger and the German-American Relations'. More...It documents a special event held at the German Historical Institute in Washington, DC on March 18, 2003. Together, Egon Bahr and former U.S. Secretary of State Henry Kissinger (another prominent witness to history) reflected upon German-American relations during Brandt’s chancellorship. Contemporary tensions between the United States and Germany, which peaked in March 2003, immediately before the beginning of the American and British war against Iraq, gave many of the speeches particular force. This being the case, they function as historical documents in two respects: first, they shed light on Willy Brandt and his relationship to the United States during the Cold War era; second, they demonstrate the extent to which the events of 2003 strained the relationship between Germany and America, and at the same time, they testify to the friendship between Egon Bahr and Henry Kissinger, which continued to grow over the years, despite disputes between their respective countries.
