Introduction to the Willy Brandt Edition in English
The Cold War History Project in Washington, D. C., has published CWIHP e-Dossier 22, "Introduction to the Willy Brandt Document Collection Berliner Ausgabe" by Bernd Rother, vice executive director of the Federal Chancellor Willy Brandt Stiftung. Pulling together 22 of the most insightful documents from the mammoth ten-volume German-language collection Berliner Ausgabe, Rother explores many of the key phases of West German Chancellor Willy Brandt's political life, including Ostpolitik and detente, the early 1980s era of renewed confrontation, Brandt's relationship with Soviet leader Mikhail Gorbachev, and his work on the North-South Commission aimed at developing a comprehensive international development strategy. BERLIN EDITION presented in Washington D.C.
Launched by the Federal Chancellor Willy Brandt Foundation in 1998, the Berlin Edition was conceived as project intended to offer the historically-minded and politically interested audience access to Willy Brandt’s letters, notes, interviews, diary entries, along with manuscripts of speeches and memoranda. The recently completed document collection Willy Brandt – Berliner Ausgabe consists of ten edited volumes covering Brandt’s lifespan from his youth in exile through all stages of his political career, up until the German Unification.
Bernd Rother and Karsten Voigt recently introduced the Berlin Edition at a Wilson Center discussion, co-hosted by the Federal Chancellor Willy Brandt Foundation, the Friedrich Ebert Foundation, and the German Historical Institute. A selection of translated documents, which reflect the main themes highlighted in the volumes, were available to attendees at the event, as well as on-line.
The complete event was recorded by camera. Feel free to watch it here ....

The operating company of the future airport Berlin Brandenburg International (BBI) announced on December 112 its decision to name the airport (at present Berlin-Schönefeld) after Willy Brandt. The Board of Curators and the Board of Governors of the Willy Brandt Foundation welcome this decision. From 2012 on BBI will be the only airport of the German capital. Berlin-Tempelhof was closed a year ago. Berlin-Tegel is scheduled to follow in two years.
