On 30 August 1946 the French occupation authority creates the state of Rhineland-Palatinate by merging the Palatinate with parts of the province of Hessia-Nassau and the area of Hessia on the left bank of the Rhine. Shortly before this occurred, the British military government had founded the states of North Rhine-Westphalia and Schleswig-Holstein.
