The heaviest cannon ever built, the 80 cm gun Dora, has been in use only once: for the purpose of conquering the mightiest fortress in those days, Sewastopol; Dora fired 48 projectiles at Sewastopol, each weighing 7.1 tons

After a siege lasting for months, German troops capture the Soviet fortress of Sevastopol on 1 July 1942. Three days later, after the Red Army’s last bridgehead near Chersonese is eliminated, the Crimean Peninsula in the Black Sea now remains entirely in German and Rumanian hands.
