On 1 December 1936 a newly enacted law of the Reich makes membership in the Hitler Youth (HJ) obligatory for all boys between the ages of 14 and 18. Besides educating young men „in the National Socialist spirit“, the order of the day in the HJ also includes „paramilitary training“ to facilitate preparations for war.
