Italy declares war against Greece

Without previous consultation with Berlin, Italy declares war against Greece on 28 October 1940. Adolf Hitler is outraged with his ally Benito Mussolini. The „Duce“ has visions of re-establishing an Italian empire around the Mediterranean Sea („mare nostrum“). However, the attack by Italian troops from Albania – which Italy annexed in 1939 – breaks down in the face of Greek resistance. In a counter-offensive the Greek army even succeeds in occupying parts of Albania.
