Aufgabe
The international organization set up in 1920 in Geneva to ensure peace and economic and cultural cooperation.

Mitglieder
The League at first represents the victorious powers in World War I against Germany (only the US declines to participate).

Tätigkeiten
The League participates in the carrying out of the provisions of the Versailles Treaties (including the administration of the Saar district, supervision of the Free City of Danzig, border demarcation in Upper Silesia).
Later the League contributes to the peaceful resolution of conflicts, the protection of national minorities, and enforcement of international disarmament agreements.
The inability of the League effectively to block the expansionist policies of Germany, Japan, and Italy, reduces its international prestige. In 1933 Germany and Japan withdraw from the League. In 1937 Italy follows. In 1940 the USSR is expelled because of its attack on Finland.
The League is dissolved in 1945 and the United Nations is established as its successor.
