Seyss-Inquart Austrian Interior Minister
In a discussion at the Obersalzburg on 12 February 1938 Adolf Hitler forces Austrian Federal Chancellor Kurt Schuschnigg to include National Socialists in his government by threatening to have German troops march into his southern neighbour’s country. Shortly after this, Schuschnigg appoints the National Socialist Arthur Seyss-Inquart to the office of Interior Minister. Hitler’s intervention thwarts Schuschnigg’s intention to support Austria’s claim to sovereignty through a plebiscite.
