	imprisoned on 12 occasions; deported by dictator Salazar in 1968
	1970-1974 exile in Paris
	1973 co-founder of the Socialist Party
	1974 return to Portugal after the overthrow of the dictatorship; elected to the Assembly and soon brought into government
	in 1986 becomes Portugal's first civilian president for 60 years; re-elected in 1991
