Background
March 1954

Soviet Union recognises the GDR

On 25 March 1954 Moscow declares the German Democratic Republic to be a sovereign state. Of course, the GDR is not accorded contractual sovereignty until its treaty with the Soviet Union of 20 September 1955. Any recognition of a second German state is entirely out of the question for the West German government under Chancellor Konrad Adenauer (CDU). There they continue to speak of „over there“ and the „regime in Pankow“.
