Gustav Stresemann, member of the German Reichstag, 1920

On 13 August 1923, Gustav Stresemann (DVP) is elected as the new Reich Chancellor. He leads a coalition of the German Peoples’ Party (DVP), the Centre, the German Democratic Party (DDP) and the SPD. Previously, the Berlin Reichstag had voted no confidence against his predecessor, Wilhelm Cuno, because Cuno had refused to admonish the population of the Ruhr District to give up its „passive resistance“ against the allied occupation.
