Willy Brandt dies of cancer

Willy Brandt dies of cancer on October 8, 1992 in his home in Unkel near Bonn. The mourning of persons throughout the world is overwhelming.

The SPD says farewell to its Honorary Chairman in a funeral service in Berlin. Friends, political associates, writers, and artists eulogize Willy Brandt's personality, his peace policy, and his extraordinary significance for social democracy.

By order of the Federal President Willy Brandt is given a state funeral in the Berlin Reichstag building - the first democratic statesman so honored since Gustav Stresemann. Heads of state and representatives of governments and statesmen from throughout the world accord him his last honor.

Willy Brandt finds his last resting place in the Waldfriedhof in Berlin-Zehlendorf.
