Rudolf Hess’s flight to Scotland
On 10 May 1941 Hitler’s deputy Rudolf Hess undertakes a secret flight to Glasgow (Scotland). Supposedly he intends to initiate peace negotiations with the British government with the mediation of the Duke of Hamilton. The government refuses to engage in any discussions, and Hess is interned in London as a prisoner of war. Hitler – beside himself with rage – declares his deputy a psychopath and removes him from all his party functions. Martin Bormann is named his successor.
