during World War I as Commander-in-Chief of the German Eighth Army he defeats the Russian forces at Tannenberg/East Prussia and thereby stabilizes the East Front
Chief of the Military High Command; in view of the hopeless military position, in October 1918 he calls for cease-fire talks and organizes the retreat and demobilization of the army
1925 elected Reichs President as the candidate of the right-wing parties
1932 he is reelected as the opposition candidate to Adolf Hitler
on January 30, 1933, he appoints Hitler as Reichs Chancellor
